Healthy Foods to Boost your Kids Immunity

My eldest is 23, and my youngest is 5. I have done a lot of research over the years about nutrition and would love to share with you what I've learned. Please feel free to comment with any ideas, or knowledge you would like to share, I'd love to read it.

My favourite Nutritional Therapist is Lucy Burney. I bought her book 'Immunity Foods for Healthy Kids' about 16 or 17 years ago, and I still use it now. If you can get hold of a copy I can honestly say you won't be disappointed. It's packed full of immune boosting foods and recipes to boost your child's natural immunity and fight off illness. It was this book that inspired me to start studying a nutrition course. All I had learned before reading this book had been passed down to me though my Grandmother and Mother. I realised how much knowledge I already had through what I had been taught by the women in my family.

It was Lucy Burney's book where I first learned about the connection of kissing your baby and immunity. I'm going to quote directly from Lucy's book as she says it much better than I could:

'Kissing your Baby - an Immune Connection

'Rather remarkably, breastfeeding mothers can protect their babies by providing tailor-made antibodies to the bacteria and viruses with which their baby comes into contact.

As a mother, you will already have a plethora of antibodies that have been created throughout your own life to protect you against certain diseases. Many of these diseases will be irrelevant to your new-born baby, but others will give a vital boost to his immune system. When you kiss your baby's cheek, you are effectively sampling the bacteria and viruses on his face that he is about to ingest. By transferring these bacteria to your own body, you stimulate your immune system to create specific antibodies to fight these pathogens (disease-causing microbes). You then pass the tailor-made antibodies back to your baby through your breastmilk. What a miracle of nature.'

When I first read that it was mind-blowing to me. I have seen it mentioned recently on social media, but back when I first bought Lucy Burney's book I hadn't read that amazing information anywhere before. It impressed me so much as a young mother that I read that one paragraph over and over.

Immunity Foods for Healthy Kids is my favourite book about family health, and is the only book about family health I have actually held on to.

I'm going to be sharing some blog posts about how foods can be used to help boost our immune systems, and how they can aid us in recovering from illnesses.

My Mom passed on to me many things that her mother taught her, and thankfully she passed on to me some of the things my nanny used. My Mom told me that my Nanny was the local lady that everyone would go to for advice about health, and she would also read tea leaves. I know nothing about reading tea leaves, so I'll only be sharing the nutritional things my Mom was taught by her Mom.

Some things that used to be dismissed as 'Old Wives Tales' have often turned out to be true, and is actually wisdom and knowledge that has been passed down through the generations.

Look out for my series of posts about immunity foods.
