Book Review - Delly Duck - Why a Little Chick Couldn’t Stay With His Birth Mother.

A fantastic book for Parents, Foster Parents, Adoptive Parents, Legal Guardians, Kinship Carers, Social Workers, Play Therapists or Teachers.

Welcoming someone else’s child into your home isn’t easy, but it is a thoroughly rewarding experience. Depending on what your child has been through you may possibly be dealing with some quite complex difficulties. The little girl we welcomed into our home was with us originally on a temporary basis to give her birth mother time to sort things out. It became apparent that her mother wasn’t ready to make the changes needed to keep her daughter safe so we are now her legal guardians.

We welcomed our little girl into our family when she was 17 months old, she is now 5. She has play therapy on a weekly basis with a Child Psychologist which is invaluable. Our little girl’s Play Therapist read her a book called ‘Delly Duck - Why Little Chick couldn’t Stay With His Birth Mother.’

I can thoroughly recommend this book to anyone who is adopting, fostering, or is a child's Legal Guardian.

It is written in such a way that you can use your own words to fit the characters in the book.

I love the way the book shows the love, and loss of the birth parent, and highlights the fact that sometimes a birth parent is simply not equipped with the necessary skills to keep their child safe consistently.

This beautiful, sensitively written story explains why a child may need to be removed from their birth parent, and explores in a gentle way the emotions felt by parent and child. and the roles other people play in protecting the child, and offering the child a loving, safe environment.

The illustrations and metaphors used in this book are stunningly beautiful, and are simple enough for a very young child to enjoy, but also you can easily go deeper with an older child.

The author Holly Marlow.

There are helpful tips at the end of the story on how you can use the book to foster understanding of what can often be a very complex situation.

Holly Marlow has two other books for anyone who is adopting, or in the adoption process.
